Krugerrand as the worlds' most popular 1oz gold coin, the South African Mint started to issue a second line of one-ounce coins from 1986, the Protea. The coins were 22-carat until 1997, where they switch to 24-carat.

In 1988, they issued three different versions of this coin and the one we have here is the celebration of 500th Anniversary of Bartholomew Dias' circumnavigation around the Cape of Good Hope. A 22-carat coin from 1988, it contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold (31.1 grams), but with an alloy added, it weighs 33.9 grams and has a face value of R25.
