Description

This 2001 Proof gold Sovereign 4-coin set features a Proof quintuple-sovereign (five-pound coin), double-sovereign (two-pound coin), sovereign and half-sovereign. These proof coins have been struck using specially selected blanks and highly polished dies. During striking, the coinage dies exert enormous pressure on the coin blank, with at least two separate blows (or strikes), ensuring that the impression has extra clarity.

2001 marked 100 years since Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi achieved a transatlantic radio transmission. The letter S was sent by Morse Code from Cornwall to Newfoundland, with Marconi waiting at a station ready to receive the message. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909. The Double Sovereign coin in the set features a design celebrating this anniversary, making it an unusual set.

The set comes complete with its own box and Certificate of Authenticity.
