2006 Proof £2 Gold Coin Double Set Brunel the Man and his Achievements Boxed

2006 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Brunel. In addition to releasing two individual proof gold coins celebrating the life and works of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the Royal Mint also released a twin set of these Double Sovereigns. This twin coin set is presented in a handsome box with certificates.

The Two Pound Gold Coin contains 14.63 grams of gold (twice the weight of a Gold Sovereign).

The front of the coins features the fourth portrait of the Queen, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The reverse designs are described below:.

The Man:.

The goldsmith and silversmith Rod Kelly produced this coin. It's a classic portrait of Brunel, complete with top hat and cigar, and the engineering master is stood in front of one of his own creations - the Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge, near Bristol.

The edge of the £2 coin reads 1806-1859 ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL ENGINEER.

Achievements:.

Robert Evans designed this coin to reflect the famous arched roof of Paddington Station in London. Brunel designed these arches during his time as the Chief Engineer for Great Western Railway, whose chief terminus was at Paddington as part of the GWR rail route between London and Bristol.

The coin edge reads "SO MANY IRONS IN THE FIRE".
