The 1996 £2 proof gold coin was produced by the Royal Mint to mark the European Football Championships that year. It was the first time England had hosted a major tournament since 1966 when they won their one and only World Cup trophy.
The two pound gold coin - sometimes referred to as the Double Sovereign - contains 14.63 grams of gold. 2,098 of these coins were produced by the Royal Mint.
The coin itself is in the style of a football, with 16 small rings representing the competing nations. This was designed by sculptor John Mills, with the initials JM tucked away at the very top of the ball.
The obverse side used the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Second, as produced for the Mint by Raphael Maklouf. This portrait ran from 1985 until the end of 1997.
Unfortunately, England didn't win (a similar story in 2018) but this beautiful coin was a great memento to celebrate the world of football.
