This 1996 Proof gold £5 coin (aka Quintuple Sovereign, or Crown) was issued to mark the 70th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. 2,500 coins were produced by the Royal Mint for the occasion.
The coin was one of the last to use the third portrait of Elizabeth II, as designed by Raphael Maklouf. On the back is Avril Vaughan's design, which features five flags with Windsor Castle pictured behind them. Two show the dates 1926 and 1996, while the other three are the Royal Standard, the Union Flag, and the Queen's personal flag.
The edge of the coin has the inscription VIVAT REGINA ELIZABETHA. Besides wishing the Queen a long life, it also recalls the anthem sung at her Coronation.
The gold proof five pound coin comes boxed and with a Royal Mint certificate of authenticity.
