The 2017 1oz proof gold Krugerrand is a limited edition mint coin to mark the 50th Anniversary of the coin's initial creation. It comes in an attractive box with a certificate of authenticity from the South African Mint.

The coins are made to proof quality by using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks for the striking process.

The first gold Krugerrand was released in July 1967. To date it is estimated that 53.5 million ounces of gold have been sold in the form of these coins.

The coin bears a special Privy Mark on the reverse side, to indicate the anniversary, and this is situated just above the back of the Springbok Antelope. The front (obverse) side of the coin features Paul Kruger, the South African president at the time of their creation.

Gold Krugerrands are often confusing to people because they're officially labelled as a 22-carat 1oz coin. The one ounce is the pure gold content, and the coin actually contains a fractional percentage of copper as well to give it the distinctive colouring compared to other gold coins globally, bringing its total weight to 33.92g, and not the usual 31.10g that 1oz coins are.

The coins are officially classed as legal tender (in South Africa only) by the South African government, and the South African Reserve Bank are responsible for issuing them.
